Hawks pick up first wins of the season

The Hodgdon softball team finally broke into the win column Wednesday with a pair of victories over Washburn, while Ashland baseball improved to 5-5 on the season with a high-scoring win over Wisdom.

Thursday’s baseball and softball contests feature, Central Aroostook at Fort Fairfield for 2:30 p.m. contests. The games were postponed from Wednesday afternoon. The Presque Isle Wildcats baseball team also has a make-up home contest against Fort Kent which begins at 4 p.m.

Softball

Hodgdon 17, Washburn 16 / Hodgdon 6, Washburn 4 — Kora Lambert slammed four hits to lead the Hawks to the game one victory in a slugfest at Washburn.

Carly Bragg collected four hits, including a double, for the Beavers and Trinity Saucier-Pellicer doubled and tripled. The Beavers scored eight times in their final at bat, but fell short in the comeback attempt.

In the second game, Martha Wilson notched a pair of hits to lead the Hawks (2-9) past the Beavers (0-9). Saucier-Pellicer doubled for Washburn.

The wins were the first two of the season for Hodgdon, while the Beavers remain winless.

Ashland 18, Wisdom 0 — Amber Chasse pitched the first four innings and Cami Deabay the fifth, with the duo combining on a two-hitter as the Hornets (8-3) defeated the Pioneers for the second consecutive day, this time in St. Agatha.

Morgan Doughty tripled and finished with five RBIs, while Chasse also had a triple and Danni Carter a double and a single.

Bre Lavoie singled twice for the Pioneers (1-9).

Baseball

Ashland 28, Wisdom 21 — The Hornets pushed their record to 5-5 and moved up to 11th place in the Class D North standings by beating Wisdom in a high-scoring affair played at St. Agatha.

It was the fourth consecutive win for the Hornets, while Wisdom fell to 3-7.

Drew Doughty had two doubles, Baily Clark a double and two singles, Alex Kaiser two doubles and a single and Jesse Wortman and Daniel Wortman had three singles each to lead the Hornets’ offense.

Jacob Roy doubled twice to lead Wisdom.

Hodgdon 26, Washburn 1 — The Hawks’ Andrew Tuttle fanned nine batters in the five-inning no-hitter as the Hawks (4-7) prevailed and left the Beavers still looking for their first victory on the season as they stand at 0-10.

Grady Finnemore and Matt Horton had three hits each to pace Hodgdon at the plate.

Tennis

The Houlton girls tennis team swept Madawaska in a doubleheader played on the road Wednesday, winning both matches 5-0. The Shires are currently ranked seventh in the Class C North standings. If the team remains in this spot, it will host the No. 10 seed (currently Van Buren) Tuesday, May 29, in a preliminary playoff.

The Houlton boys beat Madawaska 3-2, but then lost to the Owls by the same score in the second match of the day. The Shire boys finish the regular season with a 4-8 record and are currently seventh in the Class C North standings. If Houlton remains seventh, the Shires will host the No. 10 seed (currently Calais) in a preliminary match on Tuesday, May 29.
