Washburn hit by theft of town supplies

WASHBURN, Maine — The town of Washburn is asking the public’s help in finding those responsible for the thefts of town-owned equipment and supplies.

Donna Turner, town manager of Washburn, said the thefts occurred in early spring and more recently in late May.

Early this spring, employees of the town highway department noticed that a storage building had been broken into and that four truck batteries and chains were missing, Turner said in an email Tuesday. That equipment cost $650 to replace, Turner said.

In the last week of May, carpenters working on window replacements at the Washburn municipal building came to work one day and found two new windows missing. The windows were slated to be installed at the municipal building and cost a total of $1,110.

Matt Cole Construction of Washburn, which is not a contractor on the repairs, is donating one of the replacement windows to the town for free, but Turner said town leaders are bothered by the theft of town-owned property and are hoping members of the public may be of help in tracking down the culprits.

Anyone with information about the incidents can call the Washburn town office at 207-455-8485.
