CARIBOU, Maine — A Labor Day tradition continues in Caribou with a pair of running events planned. An 8-kilometer road race is scheduled following youth races being held earlier in the day. Both are headquartered at Caribou High School.

The Caribou Labor Day 8K Road Race will be held Monday, Sept. 3, with walkers taking off at 10:30 a.m. and runners at 11 a.m.

The walkers will set out on a course 5 kilometers in length, while the runners will do an additional 3 kilometers. The race is part of the County Challenge Racing Series. Pizza and drinks are available to all contestants following the race.

Registration takes place at the CHS ski building. Contact Chris Smith by email at christopher.smith@maine.edu or by phone at 768-9472 for more information.

A little earlier, the Aroostook Savings and Loan Viking Run will be held at the CHS track.

Registration for the 10 separate children’s races begins at 8 a.m. and the actual races get underway at 9 a.m. Runners from age 2 through the eighth grade are encouraged to attend.

Pre-K and kindergarten runners compete in a quarter-mile run, the first-, second-, third- and fourth-graders in a half-mile run and fifth-, sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders in a one-mile run.

There will be trophies for the top three male and female finishers in each race. Ribbons and T-shirts will be awarded to all the young athletes who take part.
