DANFORTH, Maine — With the fall foliage season in full splendor, a group of students from the Hollis Montessori School in Hollis, New Hampshire, recently journeyed to the East Grand School for a three-day, two-night trip down the St. Croix River.
Partnering with the East Grand Outdoor Education program, the New Hampshire youths received hands-on training on a number of outdoor recreational topics as part of the three-day, two-night adventure.
East Grand Outdoor Education students Noah Sixberry and Faith Lindsey have been working throughout September on their communication and teaching skills which they put to good use while on the outing, according to Outdoor Education Instructor Dave Conley.
“On the second day of the trip, Noah called in a nice bull moose from the campsite,” Conley said. “Topics covered by Noah and Faith included pre-river safety talk, how to read the river, proper canoe strokes, proper wood selection and fire building along with how to call in a bull moose.”
Sixberry and Lindsey are repeats with the outdoor education program and have chosen the natural resources pathway. The two are earning their junior English credit in a creative way that is centered on the outdoors, Conley said. The students will write and give talks about outdoor experiences, do some teaching, and complete outdoor related assigned readings.
Later this month, the students have the opportunity to be presenters during a teacher’s workshop at the Hutchinson Center in Belfast.
