Busy Thursday slate for playoffs

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — After snow forced the postponement of several boys and girls soccer playoffs Wednesday, teams will be busy Thursday trying to squeeze in quarterfinal contests.

Four games are scheduled for the Gehrig Johnson Athletic Complex in Presque Isle as the soccer fields for Houlton, Southern Aroostook and Central Aroostook are not playable due yesterday’s snow.

The ball drops for the first game at noon as No. 1 Central Aroostook (13-0-1) hosts No. 9 Bangor Christian (6-8-1) in a girls Class D North quarterfinal. The Panthers had a first-round bye, while Bangor Christian advanced via a 2-0 win over No. 8 Wisdom. CAHS and Bangor Christian did not meet on the regular season.

At 2 p.m., No. 4 Southern Aroostook (9-5) takes on No. 5 Katahdin (10-5) in the other D North girls quarterfinal. The two teams played twice during the regular season, with Katahdin winning  both contests.

At 5 p.m., No. 1 Presque Isle (11-1-2) faces off against No. 8 Brewer (11-4) in a Class B North girls quarterfinal. The Wildcats beat Brewer 5-0 in the regular season finale Oct. 16 in Presque Isle.

At 7 p.m., No. 2 Houlton (11-1-2) squares off against No. 7 Orono (6-4-5) in a girls Class C quarterfinal. Houlton beat Orono 1-0 and tied with the Red Riots 2-2 during the regular season.

In the day’s other playoffs, No. 4 Ashland (11-2-1) hosts No. 10 Fort Fairfield (8-6-1) in a girls Class D North quarterfinal set for 4 p.m. in Ashland. The Hornets beat Fort Fairfield 8-2 and 5-1 during their two regular-season contests.

And No. 6 Madawaska (9-6) is on the road to face No. 3 Penobscot Valley of Howland (13-0-1) Thursday at 3 p.m. in a girls Class D North quarterfinal. The two teams did not meet during the regular season.
