EASTON, Maine — A 62-year-old Easton man died in a motorcycle crash Wednesday afternoon after colliding with a minivan on Route 10.

Vance Smith was riding a 2003 Honda motorcycle along Route 10 and attempting to pass a vehicle that was making a right turn onto Richardson Road before the collision, according to Maine State Police.

The vehicle turning right was following a Toyota minivan driven by 60-year-old Mary Johnson of Easton, who was turning left into the J&B Trailer Park. Smith was not able to avoid the turning minivan, collided with it and was thrown off the motorcycle, according to Maine State Police.

Smith was not wearing a helmet and died of his injuries at the scene, according to Maine State Police.

The Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, Easton Fire Department, Crown Ambulance and Maine State Police all responded to the call. The intersection on Route 10 was shut down for more than two hours while Maine State Police Troopers reconstructed the crash scene.

According to the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, 16 people have died this year in motorcycle crashes. Last year, 23 people lost their lives in motorcycle crashes.
