PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Drizzling rain didn’t deter soccer players or their fansTuesday night as the No. 4 Presque Isle girls Wildcats and No. 5 John Bapst Crusaders competed for a coveted spot in the semifinals.
Both teams put up a strong defense starting out but the Wildcats moved quickly into the offensive, with a goal from Maggie Castonguay in the first half.
The Wildcats showcased their skills on the field, with the underclassmen supporting senior players as they faced off against the Crusaders.
Presque Isle scored its final two goals of the night with the first in at 33 minutes left on the clock and the second goal just six minutes later.
Wildcat player Clara Kohlbackner secured the win for Presque Isle, scoring both goals in the second half and ending the game.
The John Bapst girls soccer team finished their season at 9-5-1.
Crusaders head coach Steve Lammert was not immediately available to comment on Tuesday’s game.
“Despite a loss last night in the quarterfinals, we would like to congratulate the girls’ soccer team on a great season. We realize it did not end the way you wanted it to, but we are very proud of your effort and dedication to your craft this season,” the school posted on their website on Wednesday morning.
“It was probably our best game of the season,” Presque Isle Head Coach Ralph Michaud said after the game.
Michaud said the girls came into the game knowing the Crusaders would be a tough adversary, but they pulled through to get the win. The two teams did not play each other in the regular season.
Presque Isle will advance to the semifinals to compete against Hermon High School on Nov. 2. The time and location of the game has not yet been announced.
