Southern Aroostook boys basketball enjoying winning streak

DYER BROOK, Maine — The Southern Aroostook boys have enjoyed great success this season and are currently in the midst of a five-game win streak. The Warriors (6-1) are currently ranked fourth in the Class D North standings and have a key game against Central Aroostook Tuesday evening.

 

Also in Class D North, Greater Houlton Christian Academy is now 3-4 on the year, while Katahdin is 1-7.

After a couple of tough games to Easton and Fort Fairfield this past week, Hodgdon is now 3-6 on the season and is currently ranked 15th in Class C North, which is outside the playoff window. The Hawks have plenty of time to make up ground and get back in the mix. 

In Class C North, Houlton’s record now stands at 6-3 following a weekend victory over Foxcroft Academy. The Shires have now won three games in a row and are well-suited for a playoff berth. 

The following is a recap of games played through Saturday, Jan. 4, 

Houlton 53, Old Town 43 — At Houlton Saturday, Dec. 28, the Shires picked up the 10-point win over visiting Old Town. Individual results were not reported.

Easton 71, Hodgdon 60 — At Hodgdon Saturday, Dec. 28, Josh Foster’s 27 points were not enough to lift Hodgdon past Easton. Walker Oliver added 14 points for the Hawks, while Collin Caron contributed eight, Troy Hipsley six, Caleb Nash three and Dameon Sanders two.

For Easton, Austin Carver had 26 points, with Kooper Kinney and Camden Michaud both netting 13, Matt Pangburn 10, Troy Chasse five and Kyle Flewelling four.

Hodgdon led 17-15 at the end of the first quarter and 38-28 at halftime before Easton surged to a 54-49 lead after three periods.

Houlton 56, John Bapst 32 — At Houlton Monday, Dec. 30, the Shires picked up its fifth win of the season. Individual results were not reported.

Van Buren 49, GHCA 45 — At Hodgdon Dec. 30, Van Buren bested Greater Houlton Christian Academy. Will Austin led the team with 14 points, while Parker Brewer added 12. For Van Buren, Isaiah Morales had 16 points, while Luc Perrault added 11 and Henry Hebert had eight.

Hodgdon 76, Katahdin 33 — At Hodgdon Dec. 30, Josh Foster dropped 26 points as the Hawks soared past Katahdin. Walker Oliver added 21 for Hodgdon, while Caleb Nash had 10, Troy Hipsley, Dameon Sanders and Isaac Jurson each had four, Collin Caron three, and Josh Caler and Colton Folsom both had two.

For Katahdin, Blake Howes and Justin Hurlbert both had eight points, while Kaden McNalley added seven, Grady Ritchie had six, and Caleb Giles and Kyle McNally both had two.

Hodgdon led 21-13, 44-17 and 55-30 at the quarter breaks. 

Fort Fairfield 70, Hodgdon 36 — At Fort Fairfield Jan. 3, individual results were not reported.

Southern Aroostook 78, Ashland 49 — At Dyer Brook Jan. 3, Hunter Burpee poured in 20 points to lead the Warriors past Ashland. Jacob Brooks chipped in 17, while Xavier Morales added 14, Graham Siltz had seven, Camden Porter and Brennan Burpee both had four, Chris Caswell, Parker Skinner, Robert Chambers and Gunnar Siltz each had two, and Dylan Burpee had one.

For Ashland, Drew Doughty led the way with 13, while Gabe Page had 12 and Josh Celeste added 11. 

The two teams were tied 12-12 at the end of the first quarter, before Southern Aroostook took a 32-25 lead at the half. The Warriors’ lead grew to 62-39 after three periods.

Houlton 63, Foxcroft Academy 49 — At Dover-Foxcroft Saturday, Keegan Gentle poured in 20 points to lead the Shires to victory. Jaron Gentle added 13, Caleb Solomon had nine, Cam Callnan had seven, Drew Foley six, Hunter Sennett five, and Jadon Gentle three.

For Foxcroft Academy, Caleb Crocker had a game-high 21 points. Foxcroft led 16-13 at the end of the first quarter and was up 32-29 at the half before Houlton broke open the game in the third period to go up 48-38.

Greater Houlton Christian Academy 48, Wisdom 32 — At Wisdom Saturday, the Eagles picked up the win. Individual results were not reported.

Washburn 65, Katahdin 48 — At Washburn Saturday, Justin Hurlbert had 12 points, while Kaden McNalley added nine, Wesley Richardson eight, Garrett Hamm six, Grady Ritchie five and Kyle McNally four for the Cougars.

Aidin Churchill led Washburn with 24 points while Devin Dionne added 19 and Beckam Vaughn had 14.

Washburn led 19-13, 33-23 and 49-33 at the quarter breaks.
