115 Years Ago – Jan. 25,  1905

Citizens The citizens of several towns between Houlton and Presque Isle have petitioned the legislature for an adjustment of telegraph rates. Ever since the telegraph  has been in operation these towns have paid 50 cents for a message of 10 words while in larger towns the rate has been 25 cents.

100 Years Ago – Jan. 28, 1920

Horse racing Some interesting horse racing is to be had in the near future on the ice above the dam. The snow has been scraped off and a fine track is in readiness for the flyers – and Caribou has quite a number of them.

75 Years Ago – Jan. 25, 1945

Freme’s grocery store opening on Saturday  — Joseph Freme, former proprietor of the Caribou Restaurant, will open a grocery store in the same location on Water Street this Saturday, Jan.27. The store will be conducted under self service plans. A full line of groceries and confectionery will be carried.  

New market location — Dan Daniels has purchased Peterson’s Market on Sweden Street in Caribou and expects to move into the new location. His present location will be occupied by Fred Norton, who will conduct a farm machinery business.

50 Years Ago – Jan. 28, 1970

Proclaims ‘Cable TV Week’ — City manager Charles D. Hatch today designated Feb. 1-7 as “Cable TV Week” in appreciation of “education, information and entertainment” benefits made available to the people of Caribou by Caribou TV, Inc. 

Washburn may get new bridge The new bridge would replace the existing outmoded, one-lane structure built in 1901. It would be a three-span steel and concrete structure with a 28-foot roadway located at a new crossing about 400 feet downstream.

25 Years Ago – Jan. 25, 1995

Yusef’s closes A well-known Caribou restaurant has been closed for the second time in a year, leaving 45 people jobless. Employees showing up for work at Yusef’s Restaurant on Bennett Drive Monday morning found a sign posted on the door announcing the closure of the restaurant.
