Caribou statue receives an anonymous addition

CARIBOU, Maine — As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to grow, closing businesses and schools indefinitely, a mystery person put a maroon face mask on Caribou’s iconic Caribou statue earlier this week.

And while city officials don’t know exactly who outfitted the deer, they’re happy to see that someone is trying to share positivity in these uncertain times.

“It just speaks to the Caribou community,” Caribou Marketing and Events Director Christina Kane-Gibson said. “We don’t know who it is, but we think it’s the same person who put a Patriots jersey on the statue earlier. We all got a kick out of it.”

A picture of the masked caribou was shared on the city’s official Facebook page on Monday and has already received 200 likes and over 100 shares.

Kane-Gibson said the community’s reception is that the maroon mask, based on the city’s school colors, was a nice gesture and an effort to elevate everyone’s spirits.

“You have to try to lighten up during times like this,” she said. “It’s something that gives you a little chuckle every time you pass by; we appreciate whoever did it.”
