BRIDGEWATER, Maine — Bridgewater Fire Department and Maine State Police were called to a potato truck fire on U.S. Route 1 Saturday around noon.

The potato truck was engulfed in flames when police arrived, police said. Bridgewater Fire Department, which arrived first, was able to put the fire out.

Reginald Shaw, 65, of Bridgewater was driving the truck when he noticed the vehicle smoking and pulled over.

“When he got out of the truck, he noticed the truck was on fire due to the potato tops stuck under the truck,” police said.

Most of the load of potatoes was salvaged.
