HOULTON, Maine — A 28-point effort from Presque Isle’s Faith Sjoberg lifted the Wildcats to a 52-48 victory over Houlton Wednesday evening in girls basketball action.
For Presque Isle, it was the team’s first game since playing in the Class B North Tournament last February. But the Wildcats didn’t seem to show any signs of rust.
Sjoberg scored half her team’s points, with 18 of those points coming from beyond the 3-point arc. Wildcats Rhylee Kinney (11 points), Sade LaPointe (7 points) and Anna Jandreau (5 points) also helped the scoring effort.
“It’s good to win,” said Presque Isle Coach Jeff Hudson. “Anytime you come to Houlton and win, it’s a good day.”
Presque Isle pulled to a 25-21 lead by halftime, though Houlton continued to fight back and kept the game close throughout. Houlton was led by Mia Henderson with 17 points, with Drew Warman (8 points) and Sam Johnson (7 points) also contributing.
At one point in the third quarter, Houlton came within a point of tying the game, but Presque Isle pulled ahead once more and did not relinquish its lead.
“We would make some runs to kind of cut [the lead], and then we would have those lapses or turnovers and then they’d stretch it back to double digits again,” said Houlton coach Shawn Graham. “It’s one of those situations where against a good team, you can’t make those kinds of mistakes.”
