HODGDON, Maine — Setting the tone early can often have a dramatic effect on a softball game.
Such was the case Monday afternoon as the Hodgdon Hawks hosted visiting East Grand of Danforth.
After giving up two runs in the top of the first inning, the Hawks exploded for 12 runs in the bottom of the first, creating a lead too much for East Grand to battle back from.
Phoebe Foss led off the game for East Grand with a hit to right field and eventually came around to score. Madeline Cowger walked and also scored, giving the visiting Vikings a quick 2-0 lead.
After that it was all Hodgdon, as the Hawks bats erupted in the bottom of the first inning, thanks in part to a three-run inside the park home run by Allie Winship to put Hodgdon on top 12-2. The Hawks never looked back.
Sadie Thompson pitched the win and helped her cause with a three-run home run and five runs scored. Emma Ftizgerald had four singles and three runs and Delaney Little added a double and two singles.
For East Grand, Foss finished with a double and single.
