Mapleton crash leads to OUI charges

MAPLETON, Maine — An Ashland woman was charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence after crashing the 2006 Ford Focus she was driving into the back of an SUV towing a U-Haul trailer on Route 163 in Mapleton Thursday afternoon, according to Maine State Police.

Katrina Majkszak, 47, was traveling west on Route 163 when she crashed into the back end of a 2006 Toyota 4-Runner driven by 57-year-old Jean Hodgkins of Worcester, Massachusetts. Hodgkins was towing a U-Haul trailer and was about to turn into a driveway, police said.

Majkszak was taken to AR Gould Hospital by Presque Isle Fire and Ambulance for what appeared to be minor injuries. Hodgkins and a passenger riding in the vehicle, were not injured.   

Initially, Presque Isle police were investigating reports of an intoxicated driver after receiving several phone calls from concerned motorists and were searching for the operator at the time the crash was reported.

When the crash occurred Sgt. Tyler Cote of the Presque Isle Police Department was closest to the crash and responded to ensure that the operator did not flee the scene.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged, police said. 

Majkszak was charged with operating under the influence, driving to endanger, and violating conditions of release.

Majkszak’s hearing is slated for Aug. 11 in Presque Isle.
