75 Years Ago –  June 13, 1946

County Deputy’s Association president — Sheriff Jasper Lycette was re-elected president of the Aroostook County Deputy’s Association at a meeting held June 10 at the Hotel. Commander George Baker of Houlton  was elected secretary treasurer.

The following deputy sheriffs were present: Leon Bowers, Sherman; Frank Harper, Oakfield; Arthur Libby Brdgewater; James Chrichton, Mars Hill; L. Ralph Kent, Aurielle Vielleux, Fort Fairfield; Donald De Long, R. A. Junkins, Arthur Hussey, Delbert Packard, Presque Isle; Samuel Oakes, Ashland; James Donnelly, George W. Harmon, Frank Hopper, William Castonguay, Caribou; Irvine Clark, Washburn; Hjulman Lund, New Sweden; Henry Racliffe, Earl W. Fraser, Easton; Adrien Carbonneau, Homer Langlais, Van Buren; Gilman W. Page, Frenchville; George Ouellette, Fort Kent; Remi Deschane, Eagle Lake; McKinley Spear, Limestone; Herbert Kinney, Houlton; and Fedime Morin, Madawaska.

Mapleton 4-H Club news — The 4-H Club members of Mapleton met June 6 in Mapleton High School with a good attendance. The Try and Beat It (the boys) had a demonstration given by Clifton Higgins on “How To Plant A Garden.” The “I’ll Try” met in the Home Ec. Room. Miss Ethel MacNeil gave a demonstration on sewing, Mrs. Caroline Smith gave a demonstration on making muffins and Mrs. Avis Dudley gave a demonstration on canning carrots.

Generals here — Major Gen. Chauncey and Brig. Gen. Couch, both of the Air Service Command with headquarters at Rome, N.Y., made a routine inspection of the Presque Isle Army Air Field. Col. Theodore Gorton, commanding officer of the Field, said that the two generals inspected the runways and housing facilities of the Field.

50 Years Ago –  June 16, 1971

Ashland junior earned Young Leader award — Jane A. Craig, a junior at Ashland Community High School, was presented the National Foundation March of Dimes Outstanding Young Adult Leader award. As their community service project in 1971, the Ashland Chapter of Future Homemakers of America chose to assist with the March of Dimes drive. Miss Craig, as chairman, first showed a film depicting the purpose of the March of Dimes to her club and to other interested students. She then organized the drive with the help of the following students: 

Mary Alward, Denise Campbell, Yvonne Chasse, Joy Deabay, Peggy Deabay, Cathay Goodblood, Darlene Jimmo, Donna LaBelle, Gloria Lajoie, Joanna Rafford and Wanda Wakefield.

B & A received safety award — The Bangor and Aroostook Railroad was one of 15 railroads to receive an E. H. Harriman Award for safety during 1970. The road received a bronze medal for excellence in employee safety in the Group C railroads working less than 5 million manhours a year. The awards were presented by John H. Reed, Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board during a luncheon at the Madison Hotel in Washington on June 9.

25 Years Ago –  June 12, 1996

Grocer joines savings and loan board — John Swanberg, president of Aroostook County Federal Savings and Loan Association, announced that William Smythe was elected to the Board of Directors of Aroostook County Federal Savings and Loan Association on April 11. Smythe is the owner of Smythe’s IGA Plus in Presque Isle and President of Northern Foods, Inc. He is vice chairman of The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle. In addition, he is a past president and current member of the Presque Isle Rotary Club, Presque Isle Area Chamber of Commerce and Presque Isle Industrial Council.. Also, he is a current member of the Presque Isle Elks Club, the Presque Isle Fish and Game Club and Director of the Presque Isle Snowmobile Club. Aroostook County Federal Savings and Loan Association had $37 million in assets as of April 30, 1996. It had been serving the communities of Aroostook County since 1936.

TAMC appointed senior manager — The Aroostook Medical Center appointed Paul Bursey, R.N., as the senior manager for Critical Care Services. His new position is to oversee the operating  room, recovery room, special care unit and progressive care unit. Bursey previously worked as the Clinical Service Line Manager for Pediatrics and Intensive Care Unit at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu, Hawaii.
