HOULTON, Maine — Before becoming a licensed esthetician, Kimberly Maguire worked as a fashion model, walking on runways and traveling around the world. Now, she hopes to bring some of what she’s learned to the people of Houlton.
“I wanted to bring stuff that I’ve experienced in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, everywhere that I’ve lived,” Maguire said at her new Sundara Med Beauty Spa, located on Houlton’s Water Street. “I wanted to bring that here, but keep Houlton prices.”
Prior to moving to Houlton, Maguire lived in Kingstown, Rhode Island, with her husband Jeff. But they had visited Houlton often after purchasing a tree farm in Grand Isle, and when their daughter decided to attend the University of Maine in Orono, they decided to make the move.
“Everything was just kind of so organic to come up here, and we really like the community,” Maguire said. “It was quiet, it was safe, it’s very family-oriented. It felt nice to have that very welcoming feel, and I just loved the natural beauty and the aesthetics of the whole community.”
Now, Maguire hopes to help Houlton residents with their own beauty needs.
Maguire plans to cater to men, women and teenagers, as well as work with those with extremely sensitive skin, using techniques like microdermabrasion and Circadia skin care products.
Maguire plans to open the spa for business sometime in late August or beginning of September.
“The beauty industry is always changing. It’s very fluid. And so we’re always changing as people,” she said. “My goal is, whatever someone’s concern is, that we can work together to find a solution.”
