100 Years Ago – Oct. 27, 1921

Shopping trip Mrs. Emma Boone, proprietor of the Elite Shop has returned from Boston where she was doing her fall shopping for the store. She reported that the Boston weather was very warm.

New platform — An entirely new platform is being laid at the Bangor and Aroostook station. The work is being done by Danny Millar and when completed will be dedicated to improvement on the station’s appearance. New boardwalks were also laid.

75 Years Ago – Oct. 23, 1946

Fund raising prize — A TV set was presented to Authur Keating Monday by the Houlton Community Golf Club as part of a drive to raise funds for a new watering system to improve the quality of the greens.

Newspapers choose class reporters — The class reporters for the Pioneer Times, Bangor Daily  and Portland Press Herald were chosen this week at the high school. They are Charlotte Beals, Frank Totman, Jackie Clifford and Donna Beals.

50 Years Ago – Oct. 27, 1971

New at Katahdin — Among the new faces at Katahdin High School this fall is Mrs. Jarice Kelly, a teacher and her position were among those approved last year under joint negotiations between the Board of Directors of SAD #25 and the teachers association.

New sawmill in Patten The Alan Benson Lumber Company Inc., announced the starting of  a softwood mill in Patten, according to mill manager Jacque Cyr. A chipper and debarker will be installed as well as a building that will cut stock for the specialized industrial lumber. The new firm plans to purchase five million feet of logs annually.

25 Years Ago – Oct. 23, 1996

Out from behind the desk Shirley Reardon, of Keybank of Houlton, joined the rest of his co-workers for a day of community service recently. All 12 of the bank’s Market Square office left their desks, donned work clothes, and painted the dugouts and concession building of the Bob Ruth Field in Community Park, as part of the fourth annual “Make A Difference Day.”

Helping Hand Among those joining in to help out at Houlton High School’s Net Day were, SAD #29 Music Director Drew Poulopoulos, Nancy Henderson of Bangor Savings Bank, Houlton High School Principal David Wiggins, Max Lynds of F.A. Peabody, and Houlton High School teacher Donna Gilbert.
