Fire on Chapman Road leaves building a total loss

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A fire at 91 Chapman Road in Presque Isle has left a home and attached garage a total loss after a Tuesday afternoon blaze.

Building owner David York evacuated safely with his dog. Neither were injured, and the building was insured.

The Presque Isle Fire Department received the call at 12:13 p.m., and were en route in less than a minute, arriving at the home at 12:18 p.m. Presque Isle Fire was assisted by the departments from Caribou and Easton.

The fire began in the external garage, but once the flames spread through the roof, the blaze crawled up the siding of the house, igniting the attic as the fire spread its way through the home. The metal roof of the home made extinguishing the fire difficult, as it was trapping smoke inside.

The fire was likely caused by a grinder in the garage, where sparks may have caught some flammable material, according to Presque Isle Fire Chief Darrell White.

Firefighters on scene were able to subdue the flame after nearly a six-hour battle at 6:06 p.m.
