PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A Presque Isle home is a total loss following a fire on Monday.
The structure, located at 485 Houlton Road, was fully ablaze when firefighters arrived shortly after 1 p.m., Presque Isle Deputy Fire Chief Adam Rider said.
One person received smoke inhalation and burn injuries and was transported to a health care facility, he said.
He did not identify the person because the Maine Office of State Fire Marshal is investigating.
At the site Tuesday morning, Vicki Lessard identified herself as property owner David Perry’s daughter. Perry owns Perry’s Mini Mart just down the road from the home.
Presque Isle Fire was also at the scene Tuesday, extinguishing hot spots.
Perry was home when the fire broke out and had been airlifted to a Portland hospital, Lessard said. Another daughter is with him while she takes stock of the site.
Lessard was uncertain exactly what happened, but thought her father was in the basement and came upstairs to find the first floor on fire, she said.
He may have been looking for his dog, which is still missing, Lessard said. She had been searching the property and had not found the pet.
Though she said she didn’t know the extent of his injuries yet, she described her father as a strong man.
Perry built the majority of the log home himself about 35 years ago, she said.
Information from the state fire marshal’s office was not immediately available.
It is unknown whether the house was insured.
“It appeared there were no working smoke alarms,” Rider said. “It’s a good time to remind everyone to have working smoke detectors in your home.”
Local firefighters received aid Monday from the Easton and Mars Hill fire departments, while Caribou Fire and Ambulance provided station support, Rider said.
