FORT KENT, Maine — The Fort Kent Warrior Dolphins welcomed swimmers from Fort Fairfield and Mapleton on Friday, Aug. 5, to take part in the first competitive swim meet Fort Kent has hosted since 2010.
The child swimmers participate in the sport through their local recreation departments.
More than two dozen kids competed at the Fort Kent town pool by age group in five events — freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and individual medley.
The swimmers have competed against one another in other meets throughout The County so are getting to know each other and make new friends.
“I definitely saw kids from different teams talking to one another and socializing,” Dolphins coach Abbi Thompson said.
The Warrior Dolphins definitely had a home pool advantage, according to Thompson.
“Their friends and family came out to watch and they felt more comfortable racing in the pool they practice in,” she said.
Volunteers including Dolphin parents, along with University of Maine at Fort Kent track coach Matt Dyer and university students, helped out at the meet. A bake sale was held during the event.
The Warrior Dolphins’ last meet of the season will take place Aug, 12 in Fort Fairfield.
