HOULTON, Maine — Residents interested in serving on municipal or school boards will have ample opportunity to do so this fall.

Houlton Town Clerk Khylee Wampler announced that nomination papers are available at the town office for a variety of seats for the upcoming November election.

Two three-year seats are available for the Houlton Town Council. Those seats are held by councilors Eileen McLaughlin and Dennis Harmon.

For the RSU 29 school board, two three-year seats are available, as is a one-year term. Those seats are held by board chairman Fred Grant, Ellen Askren and A. John Hyman. Hyman was appointed to the school board by the Houlton Town Council to fill a vacancy when Tim Youngfellow resigned.

Also available are eight seats on the town’s Board of Budget Review (three 3-year terms, three 2-year terms and two 1-year terms); two seats on the Houlton Water Company Board of Directors (three years each); and one five-year term on the Cary Library.

Nomination papers must be returned to the town office by 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, so they can be certified to be placed on the ballot. All forms must contain at least 76 signatures from registered voters in Houlton.

Wampler said that all signatures must be signed in front of the circulator of the petition, meaning a petition cannot be left at a store or business for people to sign. Each circulator must certify before a notary public that signatures were signed in front of them.

Signing a petition form with a power of attorney is not allowed, she said. For information, call the town office at 207-532-7111.
