115 Years Ago – Oct. 10, 1907
Under new management — The local business of the American Express Company, which has been under the charge of its regular agent, H.D. Collins, since the advent of the B. & A. into Caribou, is now under the charge of Mr. Hazleton of Dexter, a representative of the company.
Mr. Collins has given eminent satisfaction, and the change of management is not due to any fault of his but is in keeping with the policy of the express company. The office will remain for the present in Mr. Collins’ store as formerly.
100 Years Ago – Oct. 12, 1922
Away at college — Miss Mable Johnson of Caribou is attending the Bryant & Stratton School of Boston, where she is taking the Commercial Course. Miss Johnson is a graduate of the Caribou High School of the Class of 1918.
News about Cary Memorial Hospital — Work at the site of the Cary Memorial Hospital is about done for this season. The Episcopal church building has been moved back south onto the lot bought from the James Hayes Estate. The Dr. Cary house has been dismembered, the ell and sheds have been moved east onto the lot sold to Schuyler Page, and are being built over into a double tenement house for renting purposes. The main part of the Dr. Cary house and Episcopal church building as a temporary hospital until the magnificent new building is completed.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 9, 1947
‘Operation Cement’ busy VFW workers on new headquarters — The local VFW Post’s “Operation Cement” was a complete success Sunday, when approximately 50 members gathered at the site of the future VFW home and ran the concrete foundation of the new building. The walls for the 40-by-60-foot area, and about 10 feet high on the east end, meant quite a job, as any average or small contractor would admit. But they were completed after a tough 13-hour struggle by men most of whom were not used to the task of mixing, wheeling and tamping cement.
Golden anniversary — Mr. and Mrs. Arthur A. Garden observed their 50th wedding anniversary by holding an open house at their home. Numerous friends called during the day and they were the recipients of many gifts. Mrs. Roy S. Libby received the guests, Mrs. Ethel Pendell conducted them to the dining room, which was in charge of Mrs. B.F. Porter. Mesdames A.A. Ginn and B.D. Hatch poured. Mrs. Ray N.L. Brown served the bride’s cake. Miss Ida Hatch and Miss Wanda F. Dyer assisted. Mrs. N. W. Gallagher was in charge of the guest book.
25 Years Ago – Oct. 8, 1997
New business — A ribbon cutting was recently held for the opening of CruiseOne in Caribou. Mary Crowley, a native and longtime resident of Caribou, has turned her passion for cruise travel into her new profession. CruiseOne can provide information sessions on cruising for individuals and groups.
Walk-a-thon raises $9,000 — 76 walkers showed up bright and early Saturday morning for Cary Medical Center’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk-a-Thon in Caribou. Survivors of the disease, their families or just people wanting to show their support walked the two miles from Sweden Street to Cary Medical Center to help raise awareness. More than $6,000 was raised throughout the weekend and $2,000 to $3,000 has yet to be collected.
