HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton girls soccer team has capped a perfect regular season for the first time in coach Marina Cameron’s tenure with the club.
The Shires capped their undefeated season Monday evening with an impressive 6-0 home victory over Madawaska. Houlton had previously beaten the Owls 2-1 in Madawaska.
Houlton is one of three squads in Class C North to finish with perfect 14-0 records on the regular season. Bucksport and Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield are also 14-0.
Based on the current standings by the Maine Principals’ Association, the Shires will be ranked third in the region for the upcoming playoffs, with Bucksport first and MCI second. All three squads will have a first-round bye in the preliminary round.
Against Madawaska Monday, Houlton senior Maddie Marino led the way with three goals and two assists as the Shires rolled past the Owls. Gabby Gentle, Mylee Sylvia and Lydia Byron each had one goal, while Natalie DeLucca and Amelia Callnan both had one assist.
Emma McCarthy got her 10th shutout of the season in net.
Madawaska ends its season with a 6-8 record and is sixth in Class D North.
The Shires have been a scoring machine offensively, while also proving to be stingy on defense. Houlton racked up 83 goals on the season for nearly a six goals per game average. Defensively, the Shires allowed just four goals on the year.
The Houlton boys struggled in their game against Madawaska, falling 6-0.
Carsen Cyr tallied four goals to lead the Owls, while Brady Gagnon and Ian Beaulieu both had one goal.
The Shires end their season with a 5-9 overall record and are ranked 13th in the region. Only the top 11 squads qualify for the playoffs.
The Madawaska boys finished with a 12-2 record in Class D North.
During Monday’s games, both Shire squads wore pink jerseys and pink soccer balls were used to raise awareness for breast cancer. The teams also sold raffle tickets for gift baskets, raising more than $3,000 for the Bridge to Hope cancer group.
