PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A man facing a charge of vehicular manslaughter after a head-on crash that claimed the life of a local woman Saturday night had multiple empty and full beer containers and marijuana in his vehicle, according to Presque Isle police.
William Ofria, 48, of Presque Isle, was driving a brown 2010 Ford Edge with Florida plates when his vehicle crashed into a red 2011 Nissan Altima driven by Nicole Martin, 43, at the intersection of Route 163 and Route 227. Martin died of her injuries.
Witnesses at the scene told police that Ofria drove head-on into Martin’s vehicle after trying to avoid a white Dodge SUV.
Sgt. Kyle White stated that Ofria was aggravated and slurring his words and smelled of alcohol and cannabis at the scene of the crash. Ofria was taken to the Presque Isle Police Department where he refused to be breathalyzed or have a blood test for intoxication. He was charged with operating under the influence of intoxicants. Police took Ofria to Aroostook County Jail to await arraignment.
Ofria was out on bail for another OUI offense prior to the crash.
Martin’s family has set up a gofundme page to cover funeral costs with a goal of $8,000. Martin leaves behind a husband, three daughters, and one step-son.
