Longtime Caribou school leader promoted to superintendent

CARIBOU, Maine – Jane McCall has been promoted to full-time superintendent for RSU 39 after serving as the district’s interim superintendent since July.

McCall stepped up as interim following the departure of former superintendent Tim Doak. In July, Doak began work as superintendent for the York School Department in York County.

The RSU 39 school board had intended to start searching for a new superintendent later this school year. But board members soon became impressed with McCall’s leadership, said Board Chairperson Tanya Sleeper.

The board unanimously voted to promote McCall Wednesday.

“We are overjoyed and excited by the work that she has done and feel that we’ve found the right person for our district,” Sleeper said.

McCall served as RSU 39’s assistant superintendent from 2016 until Doak’s departure. Prior to that, she was principal of the former Hilltop Elementary School in Caribou and a teacher for grades 1 to 5 at Fort Fairfield Elementary School. She was interim superintendent for SAD 24 in Van Buren during the 2022-2023 school year.

In 2009, McCall was named National Distinguished Principal of the Year by Maine’s National Association of Elementary School Principals.

“It’s an honor to work with the leaders in this district,” McCall told the school board Wednesday.
