50 Years Ago – Jan. 2, 1974
Presque Isle Wildcats wipe out Rockland — The Presque Isle High School Wildcats made it four wins in five starts Dec. 21 as they upset Rockland High 87 to 61 in a game played at the coast city. The contest was a very close affair for two periods. In fact, the first period was a dilly, the score being deadlocked at 16 all. The second quarter was almost as close, with LeBlanc’s crew holding a four point, 36 to 32 lead as the half ended. But it was in the third quarter that the locals broke loose and went on a scoring binge. They chalked up 26 points while holding the downstaters to 11. The Presque Isle five then continued to roll, ending up with a 26-point victory margin. This was Rockland’s first loss in three games.
Legion Post honored Gold Star Mothers — William Cousins Post No. 118, American Legion, and Auxiliary of Mars Hill honored Gold Star Mothers at their annual Christmas party on Tuesday evening, Dec. 18, at the Legion Home. A program was presented as follows: The Christmas Story read by Mrs. Vera Mackay; Christmas Carols led by Mrs. Lois Terrell with Miss Kristi Terrell on the piano; “Christmas Bells” by Mrs. Mildred Kinney; games were led by Mrs. Helen Nash. There was an appearance by Santa Claus and gifts were exchanged. Gold Star Mothers honored were Mrs. Phoebe Hardgrove, Mrs. Gueenie Porter, Mrs. Nellie Broad, Mrs. Amy Miller, Mrs. Ruth Lento and Mrs. Juanita Hoyt.

First baby of the year — Jonathan Lucas Murchison was the first baby born at The Aroostook Medical Center in 1999. He entered the world at 11:31 a.m. January 1, weighing 8 pounds, three ounces, and was 21.25 inches long. His parents are Tara Henderson of Mars Hill and Chris Murchison of Mapleton. Grandparents are Tomi Henderson of Mars Hill, Dan Henderson of Kentucky, and Sharon and Hazen Murchison of Mapleton. This was the couple’s first child.
Grass won Noble tourney — Presque Isle senior Matt Grass continued his outstanding wrestling season at the previous Wednesday’s Noble Invitational Tournament held in Berwick. Grass, who was seeded No. 1 in the unlimited weight division, went unbeaten at 13-0 on the campaign to earn the championship. Also turning in strong performances for the Wildcats were Travis Holmes in 160 and Jared Saucier in 189. Holmes was the eighth seed, but he took fourth. His key victory came against Morse, winning by fall. Saucier, who owned a nice cradle pinning combination, according to Grant, came out of the No. 8 seed to register a fifth-place effort.
