Former bank building in downtown Presque Isle is up for auction

A multilevel Presque Isle building that once housed Casco Northern Bank and KeyBank is on the auction block.

The property at 187 State Street will face a foreclosure sale on Thursday, Feb. 22, with a preview slated Monday, Feb. 12, according to Keenan Auction Company of Portland.

“We’re presently scheduled for a sale on that date at 11 a.m. on premises,” said Stef Keenan, auctioneer and broker with Keenan Auction. “We’ve got it on our website and many, many other sites.”

The company is selling the property but is not evicting any tenants, Keenan said. Whoever buys the building will negotiate new leases.

Vision Care of Maine occupies much of the complex. Other tenants include Aroostook County Action Program and a dress shop, he said. He did not specify the building’s value.

The building sits on approximately half an acre bordering Main, State and Hall streets, with an attached parking lot. The 39,410-square-foot complex includes an annexed site at 480 Main St., which was Presque Isle’s first four-story office building.

The two-story part facing State St. was built in 1946, according to the Presque Isle Historical Society, which lists the location on their historic downtown walking tour. Northern National Bank located there. Its four-story addition was built in 1978, according to the Keenan Auction listing.

The bank became Casco Northern in 1983 and merged into Key Trust Company of Maine in 1995, according to U.S. Bank Locations.

The building’s exterior has been in disrepair for nearly a decade, with facade bricks falling off.

KeyBank moved to a new location at 774 Main St. in 2013.

C&C Rental Properties of Presque Isle acquired and renovated the former bank complex roughly five years ago, and in October 2020 Vision Care of Maine opened its second Presque Isle site there.

While a staff member at Vision Care of Maine’s Bangor headquarters said the building is not up for auction, Keenan confirmed the auction will take place. Representatives from C&C Rental Properties declined to comment.
