60th Anniversary – Dozens of directors, friends and patrons of the Madawaska Public Library were present on a Sunday afternoon in October of 1999 to celebrate the library’s 60th anniversary. Started in 1939 by the Rev. Lionel Thibodeau as the Catholic Library Reading Club, the library evolved in 1940 as the St. Thomas Public Library and then as the Madawaska Public Library in 1944. The new addition was completed in 1992, thanks to a grant for $137.600 and $250,000 from the Madawaska voters. Two individuals were honored at the ceremony: Barbara Hale who volunteered as a director since 1975; and Delia Lagasse, who served as librarian since 1958. The families of both women donated stained glass windows in the library reading room in honor of their mothers’ long-time service to the community.

Bridge demolition moves forward — Sparks flew Friday morning, Oct. 3, 2014 as workers cut steel from the old Fort Kent/Clair, New Brunswick international bridge as part of its dismantling. The new bridge, which sits directly adjacent to the old, opened July 31. The cost of the demolition work will be shared equally between the state of Maine and the province of New Brunswick. The $3.1 million contract was awarded to Reed & Reed, according to Jennifer Paul, project manager with the Maine Department of Transportation. The entire superstructure and both piers are required to be removed by March 2015, according to Pierre Morin, the resident engineer with New Brunswick Department of Transportation and Infrastructure.
