The first snowstorm of the season caused power outages in several parts of Maine, including Aroostook County.
Versant Power, which serves most of Aroostook, reported outages for 1,226 residents early Friday morning. Heavy wind and snow caused downed lines, the utility reported.
Outages were concentrated in Presque Isle, Mapleton and Ashland areas, with some through southern Aroostook.
At 11 a.m., 618 County residents remained without power, according to Versant’s online outage report. More than 16,000 were still affected in Penobscot and Piscataquis counties.
Eastern Maine Electric Cooperative, which serves some customers from Houlton south, reported 958 residents without power.
“Linemen are making progress this morning, but as trees unload the heavy, wet snow today, we may see new outages occurring,” the cooperative stated in an online outage report.
Linemen were working in Danforth, Bancroft, Shin Pond and Weston around 2:30 p.m. Friday, Eastern Maine Electric’s online report stated. Progress was slow due to numerous damage locations and tree branches, emptied of snow, snapping upward into power lines.
