CARIBOU, Maine – A two-story home in Caribou is still standing but no longer suitable for occupancy after a Thursday morning fire.
All eight residents are safe and no injuries were reported after a fire broke out around 10 a.m. at 54 York Street, said Captain John Thornton of Caribou Fire & Ambulance.
All crews cleared the scene around 12:20 p.m. after the fire was put out. The fire originated from an improperly installed wood stove located in a shed adjacent near the back of the house, Thornton said.
Though the home’s structure is still stable, there was enough damage inside and outside to deem the house no longer suitable for living, Thornton noted.
Eight residents were displaced and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. The Cubby Thiftstore in Caribou donated clothing to the residents, Thornton said.
Caribou Fire & Ambulance received assistance from Limestone, Fort Fairfield, Presque Isle and Washburn fire departments.
