Valley loses faith in its final French Mass — The St. John Valley, long known for its French language and culture, no longer has a regularly offered Catholic Mass in that language. After nearly 86 years celebrating at least some of its regularly scheduled Masses in French, the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church ceased that practice in November, becoming the last Catholic church in the Valley to do so, according to the Rev. James Plourde. That decision was made due to several factors, according to Plourde, who oversees Notre Dame du Mont Carmel Parish. Plourde cited the added costs of purchasing the French missals and songbooks, nearly $4,500 annually, as a factor in eliminating the French Mass at St. Thomas.
