With over 96 million “birders” in the United States and the number of species that can be seen right here in Aroostook County, including rare birds, Presque Isle is pleased to welcome our birding friends.
According to AI, “A birder is a person who observes, studies, or listens to wild birds as a hobby. The term is often used interchangeably with ‘birdwatcher,’ but it frequently carries a slightly more active or dedicated connotation, referring to enthusiasts who travel to spot new species or keep official lists of the birds they encounter.”
From spring warblers and migrating waterfowl to majestic raptors and boreal forest specialties, Presque Isle offers birders a chance to experience northern Maine’s rich natural diversity in every season. More than 264 bird species have been recorded here, with 121 eBird hotspots.
Whether you are building your life list, photographing elusive species or simply enjoying a quiet sunrise walk, Presque Isle provides accessible birding locations, scenic landscapes and welcoming small-town hospitality.
Birders visiting the region can explore wetlands, rivers and lakes, forest (boreal, mixed and hardwood), agricultural fields, mountain habitats and nearby conservation areas – all within a short drive of local lodging and dining.
Maine has millions of acres of spruce and fir forest, and is one of the last intact boreal habitats in the eastern United States.
You may see some of the following here: boreal chickadee, spruce grouse, black-backed woodpecker, three-toed woodpecker, bay-breasted warbler, Cape May warbler, Bonaparte’s gulls, redheads, northern shovelers and ruddy ducks, just to name a few.
Presque Isle is so fortunate to have amazing natural habitats and beautiful birds can be seen most anywhere. Here are some suggested locations:

Aroostook State Park (State of Maine) – 87 State Park Road – 108 species
Mantle Lake Park (City of Presque Isle) – 110 Pine Street – 94 species
Riverside Park (City of Presque Isle) – 36 Riverside Drive – 70 species
While in the area, be certain to check out Lake Josephine, Christine Lake and the Aroostook Wildlife Refuge – some of the best birding spots in northern Maine.
