A fire destroyed a home on the Margison Road in Woodland overnight.

A 911 call reported the fire at 276 Margison Road around 12:20 a.m., the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department said in a press release. When crews arrived, they found heavy fire at the rear of the house extending into the roof.

Firefighters knocked down the fire from inside the home and fought the blaze for six and a half hours to contain hot spots, pumping approximately 31,000 gallons of water overall. The building is a total loss, the department said.

The fire is believed to have started from improperly discarded smoking materials found outside the home, the department said.

All of the house’s occupants are accounted for. No injuries were reported. The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the home’s owner.

The town of Woodland contracts fire and ambulance services from neighboring Caribou. The Presque Isle, Fort Fairfield, Limestone and North Lakes fire departments provided mutual aid.
