A Tuesday fire left a Van Buren home uninhabitable due to smoke and water damage.
The Van Buren Fire Department received a call at around 3:40 p.m. that a two-story Main Street home was ablaze, Chief Brian Caron said.
Firefighters arrived to see black smoke rolling from the eaves and door frames, with all the windows blackened with haze.
Caron requested mutual aid from nearby Grand Isle and from St. Leonard, across the border in New Brunswick, he said.
Crews broke a window to vent the fire and prevent a backdraft as the fought the fire. They used thermal cameras to check for further flames elsewhere in the house.
The water district helped firefighters set up a water shuttle, as the home was out of hydrant range, Caron said.
Safety personnel closed Main Street for about an hour, and the site was cleared by 9 p.m.
No injuries were reported and no one was home at the time, Caron said.
He did not immediately respond to an inquiry about who owns the property.
The state fire marshal’s office is investigating.
