Electric heater likely sparked fire in old ambulance being used as a camper

An electric heater likely caused a Thursday fire involving a privately owned ambulance in which someone was living, Caribou fire officials said.

The owner had returned from errands to find the vehicle on fire, Caribou Fire and Ambulance Capt. Scott Dow said Friday.

“Someone was living in it and had turned it into a camper,” Dow said. “Neighbors had called the fire department, and when we arrived, the owner was trying to put it out with a garden hose.”

The department is not releasing the owner’s name, he said.

No one was injured.

Firefighters suspect an electric heater, which had been left running inside the out-of-service ambulance, ignited nearby contents and caused a “significant” fire, the department posted on social media.

Crews put out the blaze using about 750 gallons of water.
