PI girls hold off Hermon Hawks

    The high school basketball season tipped off Friday evening with a bundle of games, followed by a busy Saturday and Monday on the hardwood. The Fort Fairfield Tigers are off to a hot start, winning their first two games, while Easton, Presque Isle and Caribou were also victorious on the week.

    The following is a recap of the last week’s games.
    Easton 50, GHCA 38 — On Monday in Easton, the Bears jumped to a 10-point opening-quarter lead and held the same spread at halftime, 24-14. In the third, the Eagles outscored Easton, 12-10, but still trailed by eight points, as the Bears picked up the win.
    Mariah Wiley led GHCA with 16 points, while Kiki Smart, Desiree Vargas and Lauren Bishop all added six points.
    For Easton (1-0), Brooke Hammond and Carla Halvorson both scored 14 points, while Sydney Trask added 13; Sarah Plourde, five; and Ariana Babineau and Mindy Desmond, both had two.
    Fort Fairfield 34, Madawaska 29 — At Madawaska Monday, Amanda Hotham scored 16 points to pase the Tigers (2-0) to their second win on the young season. Fort Fairfield trailed 7-2 in the opening quarter, but rallied to a 10-9 halftime lead. That lead grew to 23-13 after three stanzas.
    Other Tiger scorers were: Courtney Churchill, 11; Danielle Tracy, four; and Brooke Beaulieu, three.
    For Madawaska, Emma Dionne led the way with 12 points.
    Katahdin 50, Ashland 32 — At Ashland Monday, the Cougars outscored Ashland 16-5 in the second quarter en route to the win. Katahdin led 28-13 at halftime and pushed its advantage in the third, 41-24.
    Olivia McNally paced Katahdin with a 22-point effort. Melissa Duffy and Myah Smallwood both had six points and Dani-Beth Cyr chipped in with five more.
    Anna Paradis led Ashland with 10 points, while Taylor Baker added eight, Brooke LaBelle, six; Jade Tilley, five; and Macie Pelkey, three.
    Southern Aroostook 49, Washburn 33 — At Washburn Saturday, the Warriors trailed 9-8 to start, but battled to a 18-16 halftime lead. In the third stanza, Southern Aroostook extended its lead to five, 31-26, but outscored the Beavers, 18-7 in the final period.
    Goodall posted 25 points, along with Kaitlyn Sommers’ seven points and Nadeau’s six.
    Washburn (0-1) was led by sophomore Becca Campbell with 17 points, while Meghan Saucier added seven; Sarah Sjoberg, five; and Jordan Chandler, four.
    Presque Isle 50, Hermon 46 — At Presque Isle Saturday, Kayla Richards netted 18 points to lead the Wildcats (1-0) to victory over visiting Hermon. Presque Isle led 12-9, 27-19 and 36-32 at the quarter breaks. Other Wildcat scorers were: Chandler Guerrette, 14 points; Elizabeth Kofstad, six; Karlee Bernier and Haley Johnston, both five; and Chelsea Nickerson, two.
    Dani Ross paced Hermon (0-1) with 13 points, while Kayla Snow added 11.
    Fort Fairfield 44, Central Aroostook 42 — At Fort Fairfield Saturday, the host-Tigers (1-0) squeaked out the two-point victory over Central Aroostook (0-1). The Tigers led 10-6, 24-18 and 31-25 at the quarter breaks.
    Hotham netted 12 points to lead Fort Fairfield, while Brooke Beaulieu added 10 points; Courtney Churchill, seven; Kelsie Wilson and Danielle Tracy, both six; and Sydney Churchill, three.
    For Central Aroostook, Chelsea Hartin netted 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Other Panther scorers were: Vicki McIntyre and Rachel Grew, both seven; Brianna Hartin, six; and Kristen Long and Kayla Cushman, both four.
