The Pistons and Celtics squared off in the first game of the season for the grades 5-6 basketball league. The Pistons picked up the 26-20 win behind a game-high 10 points from Gavin Kelley. Bradley Kinney chipped in with six points and numerous rebounds, while teammate Grant Bridges knocked down four points.
The trio of David Kofstad, Josiah Morse and Victoria Williamson each netted two points. Grant Stewart scored seven points, all in the second half, to lead the Celtics. Parker Lambert and Tristen Woodworth added five and four points, respectively. Cole Staples added two points for the Celtics, as did Frank Dawson.
Hannah Chalou’s three-point play helped spark an 11-1 third quarter as the Spurs downed the Clippers, 29-24. Jake Kinney lit up the scoreboard for 14 points to lead five Spurs in the scoring column. Grant Hemphill, Jacob O’Berry and Pat Cash contributed four points apiece for the Spurs, and Chalou’s three points rounded out the attack. Connor Murchison torched the nets for 10 points to pace the Clippers. Issac Devine almost matched the output, finishing with nine points. Marcus Ouellette and Khasen Lowe popped in two points apiece, and Brandon McLean brought the total to 24 with one point.
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department has begun registration at the William V. Haskell Community Center for its Little Wildcat basketball program for residents. Non-resident registration begins Jan. 27. Schedules will be ready on Wednesday, Feb. 10.
The program is offered to boys and girls in first and second grades and will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays after school at the community center.
The registration fee is $18. The program begins the week of Feb. 22.
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department has begun registration for a new program, Mini Hoopsters. Registration for residents is under way, and begins Jan. 27 for non-residents. Schedules will be ready Feb. 10.
This is an introductory basketball program for children in pre K and kindergarten. Games will be held on Thursdays after school at the community center.
The registration fee is $18. The program begins the week of Feb. 22.
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department has begun registration for Presque Isle residents for its after-school art program, which begins in March. Non-residents may register beginning Jan. 27. The second session’s themes are Winter Weavers and Wild Things. Grades 1-3 will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while grades 4-6 will meet on Wednesdays and Fridays, with all sessions running from 3-5:30 p.m. The cost of the program is $60 for Presque Isle residents with an additional fee for non-residents.
There will also be a Mini Monets program for children ages 2-5 and their parents. The cost is $25 for Presque Isle residents and will be held on Friday mornings from 10-11 a.m. Please contact the center at 764-2545 with any questions.
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will host the MRPA Hotshot basketball competition at the William V. Haskell Community Center today from 5:30-7 for ages 9-18. The MRPA Hotshot Competition involves shooting from five “Hot Spots” marked on one half of a basketball court. The competition tests each contestant’s speed, shooting, dribbling and rebounding ability.
Participants may shoot on any or all days, with players’ highest score to be recorded. The top three in each division advance to the regionals, to be held in Caribou Feb. 17.
