The Probus Club of Central Aroostook held its Christmas meeting on December 9, at Reed Commons, NMCC. Peggy Woodman, president, called the business meeting to order.
Twenty-six members and three guests – Ms. Bea Capps, Wilma Cambridge and Gertrude Christie – were present.
The treasurer’s report, given by Richard Barker, was read and accepted.
Ms. Meta Guiggey volunteered to be the new recording secretary for the coming year.
Mel Fitzherbert introduced the harmonious, musical Gallagher Brothers. Their toe-tapping, melodious songs started with “Oh, Them Golden Slippers”, “Sweet Bonnie Malone” and several other old-time favorites.
A sing-a-long of Christmas carols, from “Silent Night”, “Silver Bells”, “Here Comes Santa Claus” to “Rocking Round the Christmas Tree”, as well as many more, were enjoyed by the group.
This talented group is composed of the following members: Guy Gallagher, piano; Don Gallagher, “bones”; Gerald Gallagher, guitar; Pat Gallagher, vocalist; and Garold Hanscom, violinist.
Mrs. Woodman adjourned our meeting and we then all enjoyed a delicious dinner from the campus dining room.
Thirteen Probus members attended a meeting at Reed Commons, Northern Maine Community College. Meeting was called to order by President Peggy Woodman. Mel Fitzherbert introduced his friend, Brett Varnum, who served as guest speaker.
Varnum gave a most interesting talk and PowerPoint presentation of his experiences traveling as district governor for Rotary and as a teacher-trainer in martial arts.
The first trip he told about was to Mexico where in 1991 he went to represent Rotary, visiting Rotary clubs in different areas on the west coast of the country. His next trip was to Japan teaching and learning martial arts. The third trip he talked about was to South Africa where he combined both his business of martial arts and his interest as a Rotarian.
Varnum gave an oversight of the landscape, living conditions, wildlife and national traditions in each of the countries he spoke about. A brief question and answer period followed and members expressed their appreciation for the time he spent meeting with the group.
Pearl Carmichael gave a reading entitled “Wintertime.”
A brief business meeting followed. Members voted to pay $500.00 on the scholarship Probus awarded to an NMCC student. The meeting was then adjourned.
