Washburn wins tourney

Washburn hosted an eight-team Aroostook Youth Basketball League seventh- and eighth-grade girls basketball tournament Feb. 26.
Washburn defeated Limestone in the finals to take the title. Washburn led by just three points at halftime before pulling away in the second half. It was the fifth game of the tourney for both squads.

In tournament play, Washburn defeated Presque Isle White and Limestone defeated Houlton Black in double-overtime to reach the finals. In that second game, Jordyn Hopkins of Limestone hit a layup at the buzzer to send it into a second overtime period against Houlton Black. Chelsey Pelkey then hit one of two free throws with eight seconds left in the second OT session to give Limestone the win. Houlton had a shot at the buzzer but missed.
Other teams in the tournament were Wisdom, Fort Kent, Presque Isle Blue and Houlton White.
All-stars selected were MacKenzie Worcester and Carmen Bragg, both of Washburn; Pelkey of Limestone, Lauren Doak of Fort Kent, Alyssa Dumond of Wisdom, Krystal Kingsbury of Presque Isle White, Samantha Longstaff of Houlton Black, Katie Condon of Houlton White and Kaleigh Kinney of Presque Isle Blue.
