offering lifeguard training courses
PRESQUE ISLE — The Presque Isle Indoor Pool will be offering a “Lifeguard Instructor Course” on Jan. 8-9, 16-17 and 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The course will train instructor candidates to teach lifeguard training (including first aid), CPR for the professional rescuer, lifeguard management, AED essentials, oxygen administration for the professional rescuer, preventing disease transmission, community water safety and basic water rescue.
The training prepares instructor candidates by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials and methods, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants’ progress.
Prerequisites for Lifeguard Instructor Course are that participants must be at least 17 years of age by the last scheduled session of the instructor course.
The Fundamentals of Instructor Training course will be offered. Participants must pass each section of the pre-course written exam with a score of 80 percent and demonstrate competency in the skills evaluation. Pre-registration is required.
An American Red Cross Lifeguard class will be offered Jan. 16, 17 and 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $170 per participant and includes the lifeguard training instructor manual. Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, so re-registration is a must.
Prerequisites for the course are: be at least 15 years old; swim 300 yards continuously using each of the following strokes for at least 100 yards each with crawl and breaststroke; swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke; surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet; bring a 10-pound diving brick to the surface; and swim back with the brick holding it with both hands while keeping one’s face above water (timed 1:40).
General swim hours for Dec. 29 to Jan. 2 are Wednesday from 1- 2:45 p.m., Thursday from 1-2:45 p.m., Sunday from 1-2:45 p.m.
