Dollar General coming to Limestone in 2018

LIMESTONE, Maine — Earlier this month, Limestone Town Manager Matthew Pineo announced that the town will be getting a Dollar General store.

The new store will be located on the Access Highway in front of the Rising Hill assisted living center, and should be finished at some point in mid-2018.

The project was delayed in order to ensure that the property was in compliance with local codes, namely to ensure that the new store’s well is located far enough away from a fuel tank on the living center’s campus, according to Limestone Economic Development Coordinator Dennis McCartney.

After an engineering study was completed, these issues were laid to rest, said McCartney, adding that officials from Dollar General were willing to move their well if necessary.

Currently, a home with a garage and a shed sit on the property where the store will be built, and McCartney said it was his understanding that the structures will be relocated.

The property owners, who are still living in the home and did not want their names disclosed, told the Aroostook Republican that they are moving to be closer to their first grandchild. They said Wednesday that they would be moving, likely in June, before crews break ground on the new Dollar General store, but that they were as yet unsure whether they would be relocating or demolishing the buildings.

The next step in the process requires developers to seek approval from Limestone’s planning board, after which construction of the 9,100 square foot store can begin. McCartney said that, according to plans for the new building, the store’s entrance will face the Access Highway.

Currently, the only other Dollar General store in Aroostook County is located in Caribou, while there are several in the central and southern part of the state.

“I would say it should be finished pretty quickly,” McCartney said. “This company needs more stores to support their distribution system, and to support sending their truck up here.”
