RSU 29 bids farewell to retiring staff

HOULTON, Maine — The RSU 29 Education Association hosted a retirement celebration along with members of the district’s school board for staff members retiring at the end of the 2018 school year.

The event took place at  Lakeside Restaurant at Houlton Community Golf Course on Wednesday, May 30.

Guests and colleagues enjoyed light refreshments and each was honored by a snapshot of their years in the district by Superintendent Ellen Halliday. The honorees were also presented with gifts, one of which was a wooden musical bell with the years of service inscribed on it.

Those retiring are Curriculum Coordinator Rae Bates, with 47 years in education; Ervin Clark, custodian with 46 years; Brenda Higgins, elementary librarian with 30 years; Mickey Chernesky, classroom teacher with 21 years; Danny Moreau, custodian with 17 years; Sally Henderson, study-hall monitor with 16 years; Joyce Smith, director of food services with 14 years; Mary Miller, elementary music teacher with 13 years; and Betty Fraser, high school librarian with 12 years of service.

Guest speakers for the evening included: Jason Anderson, president of the education association; Halliday and principals of the district schools, Candace Crane, Cindy Peterson and Marty Bouchard.
