Snowshoeing opportunities available in Easton

EASTON NEWS

by Debbie Smith

Looking for a fun (and healthy) activity for the winter? Head out to the Science Center for some snowshoe hiking. Our trails are in the woods directly across the street, ranging in length from 0.5-2 miles. For evening hikers, reflective tacks have been placed on the trees; flashlights are recommended.

Visitors are asked to sign in at the wooden box upon entering the woods. Please read and follow all posted rules. Trails are for snowshoeing only. Dogs are allowed on trails unless otherwise marked. There is no fee to use our trails. If you need snowshoes, we have various sizes (16-inch to 30-inch) available for rent at $2 per pair, but must be reserved ahead of time. Group reservations are encouraged (recreation groups, schools, Scouts, adult groups, etc.). Please call 488-5451 for further information or reservations.

Pattee-Page Post 187 holds meeting

The Pattee-Page Post 187 American Legion Auxiliary met Monday, Dec. 5 at the home of Vice President Arlene Mullen with six members present. The meeting was opened with prayer led by Annette Copeland, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Ann Moreland gave a report of the Auxiliary’s trip to the Maine Veteran’s Home in Caribou where she, Eldora Carter, Mullen, and guest Margaret Parker from St. Stephens, New Brunswick, Canada, spent the forenoon helping the residents pick out gifts for their loved ones and had them wrapped by other units. While there they were able to visit a former resident of Easton, Gaylon Grant.

To raise money for the Post coffers, the group put a 25-cent levy on all the lamps the members had in their homes. Twelve dollars were collected in this manner, another couple of dollars was collected as fines for not wearing their pins. At the next meeting, it was decided that the levy would be 15 cents on pairs of shoes owned by the members. It was decided to hold no meeting in January, February and March. The next meeting will be held Monday, April 22 at Moreland’s home in Presque Isle. She has also invited the members for a potluck dinner at her home Monday, Jan. 23 at 11 a.m.
