Stuck trailer slows traffic on Route 1 between PI, Caribou

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Blowing and drifting snow caused the tractor portion of a tractor trailer to go off the road Tuesday morning, with the trailer sliding across and temporarily blocking both traffic lanes on Route 1 between Caribou and Presque Isle.

A storm dumped a half foot or more of snow on central Aroostook County Monday, and then strong winds with gusts of more than 30 miles per hour on Tuesday blew some of that cleared snow back into roadways.

Interim Presque Isle Police Chief Laurie Kelly said Tuesday that the tractor trailer did not crash into any other vehicles but became stuck in the morning and was taking up both lanes of traffic.

Officers were able to direct traffic around the big rig and through the northbound breakdown lane until a towing company was able to pull it out of the snowbank, Kelly said.
