MARS HILL, Maine – Outdoor enthusiasts can now enjoy the top of Mars Hill Mountain, with the opening recently of a trail to the top of the local landmark.
“A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held earlier this summer, with members of the PUC, the Big 13 ATV Club and others present,” said Tom Pickance, spokesperson for the Mars Hill ATV organization.
Following the ceremony, the Big 13 hosted an outdoor cookout at the top of the mountain.
“We held a hotdog cookout for anyone interested in venturing to the top of the mountain. We had a considerable turnout for the event,” said Pickance.
In addition to members of the Mars Hill club, members of the Star City ATV Club traveled from Presque Isle to take part in the festivities and enjoy the newly-opened trail.
“It was quite a ride up there. It sure has changed around” since the windmills were built, said SCATV Club President Dick Howlett.
The trail to the top of the mountain can be accessed near the intersection of East Ridge Road and the Country Club Road. Access is allowed on weekends only.
“It’s gated throughout the week but open on the weekends, Saturday and Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.,” said Pickance.
