Houlton Bangor Savings Bank undergoes makeover

HOULTON, Maine — After several months of renovations, the lobby of Houlton’s Bangor Savings Bank is now complete.

The new, fully remodeled interior features an all-new floor design aimed at increasing efficiency and customer satisfaction, bank officials said.

Construction began in the fall of 2021 and was completed in January, with an intent of affecting customers as minimally as possible, according to Nicholas Hallowell, branch manager.

“The newly updated interior space offers customers a more contemporary banking environment including a refresh of the teller line area, lobby and office-spaces, to allow us to better serve our customers,” Hallowell said. “Additionally, the renovation was approached in an eco-friendly way, to include new energy efficient windows, LED lighting, and a new highly efficient cold weather heat pump HVAC system.”

The construction marks the first major interior remodel of the Houlton branch under Bangor Savings Bank. The building, located at the corner of Court and Military streets, was built by Houlton Trust Company in 1978.

Some renovation work was done to the property prior to Bangor Savings Bank purchasing the branch from Fleet Bank in 1998.

“The Houlton branch renovation is one of the many planned projects for the bank in 2022 and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to communities,” Hallowell said. “We felt it was important to further invest in this community by renovating and modernizing the branch to better support and serve our customers.”

The redesigned lobby features an area for customers to have freshly brewed coffee or to grab water from a miniature refrigerator. Numerous seats are available for those needing a place to sit.

“Our Houlton team is extremely pleased with the branch renovation as we now have a brighter, more welcoming, and more modern environment,” he said. “The redesign of the lobby and teller area provides us with a more efficient and cheerful workspace, which allows us to better serve our customers and community. I feel very proud to work at this BSB location with our team where we can welcome our customers into this beautiful space.”

One of the more striking features of the new lobby is a massive mural in the front entrance featuring a photograph of Houlton’s Gateway Crossing Bridge by local photographer Christopher Mills. Several other pieces of artwork by local artists are also featured and were selected by the bank’s marketing team for our customers and community to enjoy.

“The gateway bridge mural is an example of a local art piece that will bring attention to the good work of Bridge to Hope, a local nonprofit with a mission to bridge the hope to all of those people that are fighting cancer,” Hallowell said.
