Limestone celebrates Fourth of July with annual community parade

LIMESTONE, Maine — Patriotism and community spirit once again filled the streets of Limestone on Monday, as the town hosted one of its most popular traditions: the annual Fourth of July parade.

At least 50 floats and other vehicles from local organizations and clubs, town departments, scout troops and pageant queens rode from Limestone Community School and down Main Street. Hundreds of families lined the sidewalks, with many children waving to those who passed by or rushing to pick up candy.

The parade was one of many events that concluded a weeklong celebration hosted by the Limestone Chamber of Commerce. With an array of activities, including concerts, craft fairs, food trucks and fireworks, Limestone became the destination for hundreds of people looking to celebrate the Fourth.

The 20 volunteers who organize Fourth events were pleased to see so many people turn out this year, Chamber President Michelle Albert said.

“This week has been amazing. Honestly, every event has had an amazing turnout,” Albert said. “I think this is the year that people are done with COVID and are just glad to be with family and friends again.”

After the parade, Clay and Donna Bernier of Limestone walked down Main Street, chatting with old friends and enjoying the warm, friendly atmosphere of town.

“It’s great to see all the traffic on Main Street and the people we haven’t seen in a while,” Donna Bernier said. “For a long time [before COVID] this was our longest running parade, so it’s great to keep it going.”
