FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine – A local man died Thursday after his UTV crashed into an oncoming tractor trailer in Fort Fairfield.
At approximately 1:45 p.m., 63-year-old Robert Chambers was driving a 2021 Can-Am UTV south on Presque Isle Street when he turned abruptly into the roadway from the shoulder to access the ATV connector trail across the street, said Fort Fairfield Police Chief Matthew Cummings.
As Chambers attempted to cross, Camille Aub-Roy, 21, of St.-Anne-De-Madawaska, New Brunswick, was driving a loaded 2007 Kenworth Tractor Trailer unit and crashed into Chambers’ UTV.
Chambers was ejected from the UTV and pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet or seatbelt. Aub-Roy was not injured and was wearing a seatbelt, Cummings said.
Route 1A in Fort Fairfield was closed for three hours Thursday while emergency personnel investigated the crash. The road reopened at 6:50 p.m., according to a Fort Fairfield Police Facebook post.
Fort Fairfield Fire Rescue, Maine State Police, Presque Isle Police Department, Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine Department of Transportation assisted in investigating the crash.
