The Citizen’s Initiative Petition to Repeal the School District Consolidation Laws are now out and being circulated in Easton. If you are a registered voter and a citizen of Easton and feel that this law, that was forced on all the school districts of Maine by our state government, is wrong, then please sign this petition. It takes 55,000 signatures to get the appeal heard, but the man who began the petition is hoping that there will be at least 200,000, just to show our state government that the people of Maine do not want to be forced into anything without a vote. Those who are distributing the petitions in Easton are: Duncan Beaton, Paul Dudley, Ellen Trask and Eldora Carter. See them to sign on. Someone will be at the polls on Nov. 6 with their sheets for sign-ups.
Sunday, Oct. 21, seven members of the Easton Future Farmers of America, along with their advisor, Kevin Marquis, and two chaperones, left Easton by bus to catch a flight from Bangor to Cincinnati, Ohio. Sunday afternoon the group toured the Lexington, Kentucky, area, visiting the Kentucky Horse Park and various thoroughbred horse farms. On Monday, the group toured Toyota’s Georgetown, Kentucky, manufacturing plant and traveled to Mammoth Cave National Park for a cave tour. Tuesday morning the group started the day with a taste of southern cuisine, everyone sampled grits. Following this experience they toured the Patton Museum and viewed Fort Knox from a distance. They then traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, for a tour of the Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum. Wednesday the group traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana, to start competitions at the FFA National Convention. Easton’s FFA represented Maine in the Dairy Cattle evaluation, Farm Business Management and Job Interview events. While at the convention, they had the opportunity to attend convention sessions and the huge career fair. Thursday night the group attended a Beach Boys concert in the RCA Dome. Friday after the awards banquets, the group traveled back to Florence, Kentucky, to prepare to catch their flight back to Bangor on Saturday morning. Those attending were: Matt Blodget, Caleb Bomar, Kristen Boxwell, Luke Budreau, Chris Flewelling, Sadie Romano, Molly White, chaperones Bruce Blodget and Kim Embleton, and advisor Kevin Marquis.
The students and staff of the Easton School Department will recognize local veterans at an assembly on Thursday, Nov. 8. The assembly will begin at 1 p.m. and all local veterans are invited to attend. We would also be honored to have local veterans as our guests at the Thanksgiving dinner at 12:30 p.m., prior to the assembly. Please contact the elementary office to tell them if you will be there for dinner (488-7701) by Wednesday, Nov. 7. All local vets are welcome. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Kinsey or Mrs White at the school. Senior citizens will also be attending this annual Thanksgiving dinner also and are invited to stay for the assembly.
On Wednesday, Nov. 14, the Easton Jr/Sr. High School will be hosting a Native American program featuring Ken Hamilton of Corinth. He is well known as a living historian and Native Re-enactor of the French and Indian War. This will be a day-long program with five presentations of one hour apiece, featuring talks and European trade goods and traditional Native American objects of the 17th century. One presentation will be opened to the general public from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Visits
Sheldon, Fern and Mo Hull have returned from Portland, where they had appointments with their doctors. They were accompanied by Ezalee Smith and Nina Trask. While in Portland, they had lunch at the Country Buffet with Ezalee’s son, Mark, and his wife, Carol Smith, and Ezalee’s grandson and granddaughter, Chris and Olivia Smith. After a good report from the doctors, they returned to Bangor and spent a day at the mall.
Robert Carter, of South Berwick, drove back to Presque Isle to attend the funeral of his friend, Jerry Desmond, on Friday. He also called on his brother and wife, Clair and Eldora Carter, and took them to Bonanza for supper. Bob and Lorna had just recently been in the area a couple of weeks ago. He stayed the night with his daughter, Diane Collins, and family, before returning home.
Party
The Easton United Methodist Church’s choir held their practice at the home of Duncan and Dottie Beaton last Friday and afterwards enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by members of the church. The special luncheon was to say goodbye for the winter to the Church’s choir director, Carol Guiggy, of Mars Hill, who will be wintering in Naples, Florida; and Margery Niblett, of Easton, who will winter at her home in Beverley Hills, Florida. Those attending from Mars Hill were: Joan Walsh, Francis Banks, Clara Hussey and Elaine Bailey. From Easton were: Marie Hewitt, Margery Niblett, Freda and Rollie Dionne, Clair and Eldora Carter, Nina Trask, Dale Blanchard and the Beatons.
Sympathy
Our sympathy goes out to Kenneth Desmond and his family, of Easton, on the death of his brother, Jerry Desmond, Sr., of Presque Isle, who passed away at the Eastern Maine Medical Center on Monday, Oct. 29. Jerry, 77, came from a large family in Island Falls and attended the schools there. After graduating from high school, he joined the Army and served in Eritres, Africa, as a cryptographer. After returning home he married his high school sweatheart, Mable Lenentine, and enrolled at the Aroostook State Teacher’s College to become a teacher. He graduated from the University of Maine with a nachelor of dcience degree in education and became a teacher in Mapleton as well as a baseball coach. He also taught at Skyway but they always made their home in Mapleton. Jerry was very much into sports of all kinds and was very busy in other organizations. He leaves: his wife of 56 years, Mabel; two sons, Jerry Jr. and family, and Jed and family; and two daughters, Ronnee Johnston and family of Medway, and Jennifer of Presque Isle; eight grandchildren and a great granddaughter. He also leaves: besides his brother, Kenneth, of Easton; sisters Betty Quint of Patten, Katherine Merrill of Presque Isle, and Sharon Porter of Old Town; and brothers Dale of Crystal, and Donald of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Rev. Kenneth Phelps and Dave Goupille officiated at the funeral and interment was at the South Side Cemetery in Mapleton. Donations may be made to his memory to the Mapleton Lion’s Club, P.O.
