‘No dance’ policy deserves explanation

To the editor:

As a parent of a child that attends Presque Isle Middle School, I must admit I am genuinely disappointed. I am disappointed in the lack of communication between school officials and parents. I have seen several post on Facebook during the last couple of weeks in regard to the choice of the school to no longer hold dances on school property.

While I do understand that dances are an extracurricular activity and it is indeed the choice of the school to no longer host them, I do not understand the lack of communication. We receive report cards to keep us informed of our children’s academic progress. We receive detention slips when our children are misbehaving in class or making poor decisions on the bus. We are invited to attend parent-teacher conferences to discuss progression during a school quarter. We are included in daily activities that pertain to the fundamentals of communication.

An incident occurred at the last PIMS dance that has halted all further dances. Was it inappropriate dancing? Suggestive clothing issues? Smoking in the bathrooms? A case of body surfing gone wrong? I wish I knew but regrettably I was not informed of the action of one (or many) that has curbed the chance of my PIMS student to socialize and interact with his peers at a dance.

Parents and families that are not fully informed of situations can do nothing to rectify a behavior or issue. Success starts at home and to be effective parents we must not feel estranged from the institution our children attend.
